Tone Your Bod with Kickboxing

Tired of your monotonous gym routine to burn stubborn fat? This past week I decided to take up LA Boxing on the offer of a free first class. It was full of intensity and challenge that left me feeling energized.

The combination of resistance drills (everything from push ups to planks), and aerobic conditioning will result in your body burning loads of calories. This strenuous workout allows you to burn both carbs and fat during conditioning, with continued fat burning following the work out due to the resistance training aspect. The cardio-conditioning element of kickboxing is one of the most effective ways to burn calories from fat and carbohydrates. In general, the harder you work, the more calories you burn, with most of those calories coming from carbs. In this situation, the body opts to burn the fuel source that is easiest to burn and requires the least amount of oxygen. The American Council on Exercise found that a kickboxing workout burns 800-1,000 calories per hour but is varied based on your level of exertion, sex, age, and body composition. Because boxing techniques rely on activation of the whole body, a large amount of calories can be burned in a relatively short period of time.

Kickboxing is the perfect workout to release aggression, improve balance, strengthen core, and not to mention some kick ass self-defense moves! ACSM fitness expert, Fitz Koehler, states that, “activities like kickboxing and running stadium steps are ideal because they deliver the most bang for your energetic buck. They both provide intense cardiovascular training paired with an equally tough resistance training experience. For a lean, hard body, they’ll get you where you want to go in a rapid fashion!”

  1. Wonderful blog I love the fact that you can track it through your email and be updated about new posts so you know exactly when to check it and you don’t miss a topic that your interested in.

  2. I’ve heard great things about LA Boxing, although it has a pricey membership. Have any ideas of other workouts that burn just as many calories? I’ve also heard great things about the Insanity at home workout videos which are supposed to burn 800 calories per workout, but what do you think about at home work out videos compared to going to an actual facility?

  3. Monica, you are correct that classes at LA Boxing are quite pricey, however they offer reasonably priced package deals often through discounted websites such as groupon and living social. If workout videos such as Insanity work for you, then go for it! I find working out around other people creates the best form of motivation so I tend to find it difficult for these workout videos to keep me motivated throughout the duration of the video. If you have a gym membership (La Fitness, for example), they oftentimes provide free kickboxing classes!
